Description
In ALA.NI’s Le Diplomate, featuring Iggy Pop, drawn sets surround the character: perspective lines, stairs and a crowd of black and yellow dots.
From floor to wall.
Black and yellow lines extend across the floor and up a vertical wall. This change of direction gives volume to a set made of lines.
A crowd of dots.
The shift from black to yellow follows the character’s gesture across the crowd.
01 / Storyboard
Planning the gestures.
The storyboard supplied by the production team sets out the actions: walking with a briefcase, speaking and pointing towards the crowd. The sketches place these gestures within line-drawn sets.
02 / Studies
Three colours, thin lines.
The brief calls for white, black and yellow, thin lines and simple shapes. The studies develop these elements into roads, overlapping frames and columns. From one image to the next, line density and direction change the depth of the set.
A title without the doorway.
The title studies combine a doorway, a blurred figure and vertical lettering. The revised brief drops the doorway and the character’s entrance, calling for vertical typographic animation in black and yellow.
03 / 3D renders
Building space in 3D.
These work-in-progress Cinema 4D renders isolate the sets before their integration with the live-action footage: frames overlapping at different depths, line-drawn stairs and fields of dots.
Walking through the frames.
Open frames occupy several planes around the character. This preview shows how they intersect with the silhouette during the walk.
04 / Stairs
An ascent from a level walk.
The footage shows a level walk, but the brief calls for an ascent. The animated set has to create that illusion. The boards propose three treatments: line-drawn stairs, a yellow fill beneath the steps or a series of columns.
Testing the landings.
Here, the stairs are reduced to their outline. The character’s movement can be read against the landings and slope, without the vertical lines of the finished graphic treatment.
05 / Crowd
From figures to discs.
The storyboard depicts the crowd as faces and busts; the animations build it from discs. The brief calls for the shift from black to yellow to respond to the pointing finger, then spread through a larger part of the group during the speech.
A curved crowd.
In this preview, the discs form a curved surface rising behind the character.
