Description
A figure moves through white curtains, disappears into darkness and returns as an image. Light breaks across the skin before the face fills a television screen.
The pleasure of exploring.
I loved stepping outside my comfort zone on this film. Moving between VFX and 3D, exploring Cinema 4D, adjusting and trying again made me want to go further. One of those artistic projects where the enjoyment of making something pushes you beyond what you know.
VFX & 3D
A face behind the glass.
At first, the portrait fills the image. As the camera pulls back, it reveals the curved glass, the television frame and then the white set. My 3D and compositing work includes this transition from the face to the screen.
Building the curve.
In Cinema 4D, I work on the curved glass, the projection of the portrait and the camera movement. The working views place the projection surfaces alongside the render through the glass.
Rendering & compositing
Layer by layer.
The same frame is rendered in several passes. Ambient occlusion reveals the contours, object IDs separate the surfaces, and the reflection pass isolates the reflections on the glass.
Integrating the portrait.
The pink markers visible in the working screenshots have been removed. The portrait is composited into the television, with the curved glass and its reflections. This work-in-progress shot is shown before stabilisation.
